A sea kayak that works equally well for a beginner's first coastal outing and an advanced paddler's surf session is a genuinely rare thing. The Zegul Arrow Play MV 3D C-Core earns that versatility honestly, and does it in one of the finest composite builds available in a production sea kayak.
Designed by Jesper Kromann-Andersen and built using Zegul's 3D C-Core lay-up, the Play MV combines a clear carbon hull with a coaxial carbon weave at mid-ship, vacuum-infused with high-quality epoxy resin and a blend of carbon fibre, carbon/aramid, and glass multiaxial fabrics. The result is an exceptionally stiff, lightweight hull that transmits inputs precisely and rewards clean technique. Sized for paddlers in the 150 to 225 lb range, the shallow-arched hull with significant bow rocker keeps the nose from diving on large wave faces, and the rounded mid-ship transitions fluidly from edge to edge in rough water. Hard chines deliver predictable secondary stability for confident edging and bracing, and the low-profile deck holds course in crosswinds without constant correction.
Outfitting follows the European approach: well-considered and precisely placed rather than heavily cushioned. The 31.5" keyhole cockpit suits most paddlers well, though taller paddlers may need to slide in straight-legged. The contour backband adjusts via nut-and-bolt for a personalised fit, and multi-adjustable thigh braces and footpegs provide the contact points needed for rolling and rescue work. The flat rear deck handles self and assisted rescues cleanly, and four Kayak Sport VCP-style hatches including a mini foredeck pod keep essentials within reach on any length of outing.
